New marina underway: construction of the new Marina Papagayo has started. Located as the northernmost port of entry to Costa Rica, Marina Papagayo will offer world-class marine services in the spectacular setting of Peninsula Papagayo, a master planned development that is already home to a Four Seasons Resort and some of the most exclusive real estate in the country. The first phase of the 350-slip marina is planned to be in operation by mid-2009, and will accommodate sportfishing boats and mega-yachts alike, plus facilities and a marina village –with restaurants, cafes and boutiques- that will provide area residents and visitors with full services as well as easy access to their vessels.
Over 1 million turtles: Even though three weeks later than usual, the major spawning season of the parrot turtle at Ostional Beach, in Costa Rica’s northwestern Pacific, began in earnest. Over a million turtles arrived, a number that surpasses last year’s recorded number, which was slightly under a million. While turtles may arrive up to 10 times a year, massively they do so only once, in one of the most awe-inspiring natural events that take place in Costa Rica’s coasts. Besides Ostional Beach, Nancite Beach –also in Costa Rica–, Escobilla Beach in Mexico, and the Orissa region, in India, are the world’s major spawning sites for the parrot turtle.
