Destination Guanacaste
Guanacaste, located to the northwest of the country, has become one of Costa Rica’s most coveted vacation regions and the site of its greatest tourism development. Beautiful beaches abound along a striking coastline that stretches from the Nicaraguan border to the southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula. Most beaches -varying from long, straight stretches of sand to tiny coves bordered by rocky headlands- are pristine and deserted, a few dotted with new luxury resorts, and others backed by small villages.
The regional international airport makes it possible to fly from major U.S. and Canadian hub cities directly in and out of the city of Liberia, and on to any one of the numerous beaches and many other natural attractions-volcanoes, national parks- of the area. Despite some recent development, Guanacaste remains mostly a laid back and tranquil region.
Guanacaste is overall more dependably sunny than other parts of the country, a climate that combined with its natural beauty and easy access are increasingly making it the ideal and ultimate location for vacation or second homes.
New luxury hotels in the works
JW Marriott Hotel construction making headway: Construction of the new JW Marriott Hotel in Guanacaste is progressing according to plan. The Hotel, being built by Real Hotels & Resorts, the hotel division of Grupo Poma, will be located on a beachfront site in the 4,000-acre Hacienda Pinilla Beach Resort and residential community. Designed by preeminent Costa Rican architect Ronald Zurcher, the 310-room JW Marriott Guanacaste Resort & Spa will be the fourth Marriott International-branded property in Costa Rica and is expected to open in late 2008.
New neighbor for Four Seasons: A new Luxury Collection hotel will be built in Peninsula Papagayo, Guanacaste. The hotel, a brand of Starwood Hotels, will be located on a development site within the concession controlled by Ecodesarrollo Papagayo, and will share the beautiful landscapes and beaches currently enjoyed by the Four Seasons Resort Costa Rica. The hotel is currently in the designing stages. The construction of a Ritz Carlton Hotel –in Playa Guacamaya, some 20 miles south of Papagayo- was also announced recently.
